While its design and operation share similarities with reverse osmosis, there are crucial distinctions. Notably, the nanofiltration membrane is not as &#8220;tight&#8221; as its reverse osmosis counterpart. Operating at a lower feedwater pressure, it doesn&#8217;t remove monovalent ions as effectively.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Selective Ion Removal<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While reverse osmosis membranes can eliminate 98-99% of monovalent ions, nanofiltration typically achieves a removal rate ranging from 50% to 90%, depending on the membrane&#8217;s material and manufacturing process. This disparity makes nanofiltration an ideal choice for applications where the selective removal of di and trivalent ions is desired, earning it the moniker &#8220;softening membrane.&#8221; This technology finds particular use in water treatment to filter low-total dissolved solids water, removing organic matter and softening the water.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Fouling and Scaling Mitigation<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nanofiltration&#8217;s &#8220;looser membrane&#8221; characteristics contribute to its resistance against fouling and scaling, requiring less pre-treatment than traditional reverse osmosis systems. In fact, nanofiltration is sometimes employed as pre-treatment for reverse osmosis, showcasing its versatility in various water and wastewater treatment industries.
