Ozone Technology in Water Treatment

At the core of Biozone’s innovation is our advanced use of ozone technology—a powerful and eco-friendly disinfection process. Ozone (O₃), a naturally occurring gas, is highly effective in purifying both water and air by neutralising bacteria, viruses, and other harmful microorganisms. Unlike traditional chemical treatments such as chlorine, ozone leaves no harmful residues, making it ideal for industries that require high levels of sanitation and sustainability.

Key Water Treatment Projects:

This year, we expanded our reach and impact through a series of prestigious water purification installations, each of which utilised our ozone-based systems to ensure the delivery of clean, safe, and high-quality water.

  • 12-Kilolitre Containerized Nanofiltration Purification System
    • A custom-built purification system that combines ozone technology with nanofiltration to provide large-scale water treatment in remote or off-grid locations. This system serves as a model for decentralized water solutions, offering unmatched efficiency and reliability.
  • 60 KL/D Sewage Treatment Plant
    • This large-scale plant incorporates ozone disinfection as a crucial step in treating wastewater, ensuring that the recycled water is safe for reuse in industrial or agricultural applications. Our sewage treatment plant demonstrates how ozone can play a pivotal role in tackling water scarcity and environmental pollution.
  • 1850 L/H Waste Treatment Plant
    • Tailored for industrial waste treatment, this plant processes high volumes of wastewater, removing harmful chemicals and pathogens. Ozone disinfection ensures that the treated water meets stringent environmental regulations while promoting sustainability.

Gozone Partnerships: Bringing Clean Water to Local Communities

One of Biozone’s most notable projects in 2024 was the installation of water purification systems at five Gozone retail stores across South Africa:

  • Gozone Woodmead
  • Gozone Dowerglen
  • Gozone Lambton
  • Gozone Olivedale
  • Gozone Parkdene

Each of these systems features our 7-stage purification process, which integrates advanced ozone technology to deliver pure, safe drinking water to local communities. The process includes:

  1. Municipal Water Intake: Incoming water is collected from municipal sources.
  2. Raw Water Tank: A 750 L tank holds untreated water, preparing it for pre-filtration.
  3. Pre-filtration: Activated carbon and glass media filters remove chlorine, organic compounds, and particulates.
  4. Reverse Osmosis: The core purification step that removes up to 99% of dissolved solids and contaminants.
  5. Ozonation: Our proprietary ozonation cycle disinfects the water, eliminating microorganisms without leaving chemical residues.
  6. Final Polishing Filter: Activated carbon blocks provide a final clean-up to ensure taste and clarity.
  7. Remineralization: Essential minerals are reintroduced into the water, balancing pH and enhancing the overall quality.

These installations highlight how Biozone’s ozone-powered purification systems are transforming communities by providing access to safe, affordable, and environmentally sustainable water solutions.

Innovations in Air Treatment: Cleaner, Healthier Environments

Beyond water, 2024 also saw Biozone advancing its air treatment solutions. In industries where clean air is crucial—such as hospitality, food processing, and biotechnology—our ozone technology proved to be an essential tool for odor control and decontamination.

Odor Control for Food Transportation and Hospitality

Odors can have a significant impact on business operations, particularly in industries like food transportation and hospitality. Biozone’s ozone systems were deployed in several projects this year to combat this challenge:

  • Ozone Deodorization: Unlike conventional air fresheners, which merely mask unpleasant smells, ozone actively neutralizes odor-causing molecules. Whether it’s in cold storage units or commercial kitchens, our systems ensure that air remains fresh and odor-free, even in demanding environments.

Cold Storage Solutions in the Food & Beverage Industry

Cold storage facilities are critical in the food and beverage industry, ensuring products remain fresh during transport and distribution. However, cold environments often harbour bacteria and mould. Biozone’s ozone-based air purification systems prevent the buildup of these harmful contaminants, extending the shelf life of perishable goods and maintaining strict hygiene standards.

  • Airborne Pathogen Elimination: Ozone’s natural antimicrobial properties allow it to kill airborne pathogens, such as bacteria and fungi, that can thrive in cold, damp storage environments. Our installations in food transportation and supermarket storage facilities have proven effective in ensuring product safety and reducing spoilage.

Advanced Wastewater Treatment:

As South Africa faces increasing pressure to manage water resources more effectively, wastewater treatment has become a critical area of innovation. Biozone’s ability to integrate ozone technology into wastewater treatment systems allows for a more efficient and eco-friendly approach.

Key Wastewater Projects:

  • Sewage Treatment with Water Reuse and Recycling
    • Biozone’s sewage treatment plants prioritise water recycling, turning treated wastewater into a valuable resource for irrigation, industrial use, and even non-potable consumption. The integration of ozone disinfection and nanotechnology ensures that the water is purified to the highest standards, contributing to both regulatory compliance and environmental sustainability.
  • Nanofiltration Systems for Mining and Industrial Applications
    • Biozone has been at the forefront of developing nanofiltration systems that address the specific needs of the mining and industrial sectors. By removing heavy metals and harmful chemicals from wastewater, our solutions help industries minimise their environmental footprint while maintaining operational efficiency.

International Collaborations and Future Outlook for 2025

2024 was also a year of significant international growth for Biozone. Our management team travelled to China in May and Dubai in September, securing key partnerships to enhance our bottling line offerings. These collaborations will pave the way for even more efficient and cost-effective water treatment solutions in 2025, allowing us to expand our product offerings to new markets and clients.

Looking Ahead to 2025

As we conclude a successful 2024, Biozone is already looking ahead to 2025 with an ambitious new strategy. We plan to:

  • Expand our air and water treatment solutions into new sectors.
  • Strengthen our focus on sustainable water reuse technologies
  • Launch new ozone and nanotechnology systems that are even more efficient, scalable, and environmentally friendly.

We believe that the innovations and achievements of 2024 have laid a strong foundation for the future, and we’re excited to continue our journey of providing clean water, clean air, and sustainable solutions for businesses and communities alike.

2024 has been a transformative year for Biozone Manufacturing.
