The challenge
Umbhaba Bananas runs banana production and packhouse operations near Hectorspruit, Mpumalanga. The project covers an ozone rinse system for the banana rinse baths and separate ozone units for the ripening rooms. Tank space and floor loading led to two 5,000 L tanks instead of one 10,000 L tank, and the existing galvanised pipework required replacement with compatible pipework.
The solution
Umbhaba Bananas uses an ozone water-recirculation skid for its banana rinse baths, together with separate ozone units for its ripening rooms.
- Rinse skid: a SOZ 60G ozone generator, a dedicated oxygen concentrator and a stainless steel electrical control panel, on a food grade stainless steel build.
- Ozone dissolution: an off-gas chamber and a gas mixing liquid pump, designed for dissolving ozone into the rinse water. An ozone destructor is designed to neutralise unused ozone.
- Protection: a backflow prevention device, designed to protect the oxygen concentrator from water entry.
- Control: automated timing for circulation across multiple stations, with tank recirculation and injection, and ORP indication.
- Tanks and circuit: two 5,000 L tanks. A separate ozone contact and storage circuit with a basin supply pump allows the rinse-water system to be integrated with the existing packhouse.
- Ripening rooms: separate timer-controlled ozone units.
SOZ ozone generators are supplied and supported by Biozone, a South African engineering company.
Client benefit
The rinse skid is designed to support rinse-water hygiene in the packhouse.
Sustainability
Ozone has the potential to reduce reliance on conventional disinfectants.
Design basis
- One SOZ 60G ozone generator, a dedicated oxygen concentrator and a stainless steel electrical control panel on the rinse skid
- Ozone water-recirculation skid for banana rinse baths, with two 5,000 L tanks
- Off-gas chamber, gas mixing liquid pump, ozone destructor and backflow prevention device
- Automated timing for circulation across multiple stations, with ORP indication
- Separate timer-controlled ozone units for the ripening rooms
Safety note: For unoccupied spaces or enclosed water treatment systems only. Ozone should not be inhaled.
