Can Ozone Remove Nitrates from Drinking Water?

Nitrates are among the most common contaminants found in groundwater, borehole water, and agricultural water sources. Elevated nitrate concentrations can occur naturally, but they are often associated with agricultural runoff, fertiliser use, livestock activities, and wastewater contamination.

High nitrate levels in drinking water are a growing concern because long-term exposure has been linked to health risks, particularly for infants and vulnerable populations.

A common question in water treatment is:

Can ozone remove nitrates from drinking water?

The simple answer is no.

Ozone (O₃) is an extremely effective oxidising agent used worldwide for water purification, disinfection, oxidation, and taste and odour control. However, ozone does not directly remove nitrate (NO₃⁻) from water.

In fact, ozone is often used to oxidise nitrite (NO₂⁻), a more toxic nitrogen compound, to nitrate, a more stable form of nitrogen in water.

Once nitrate is present, specialised treatment technologies are typically required to reduce or remove it.

These could include:

  • Reverse osmosis systems
  • Nanofiltration
  • Ion exchange technology
  • Biological denitrification processes

Water chemistry, nitrate concentration, flow requirements, and operational objectives of the application dictate the  most appropriate solution.

Why Water Testing Matters

One of the most common mistakes in water treatment is selecting a technology before understanding the water quality challenge.

Water that appears clear and clean can still contain elevated nitrate levels, as well as dissolved minerals, bacteria, heavy metals, or other contaminants.

Comprehensive water analysis is,s therefore, the first step in designing an effective treatment solution.

The Biozone Approach

At Biozone Manufacturing, treatment systems are engineered around the specific water quality requirements of each application.

Rather than applying a one-size-fits-all solution, our team evaluates the source water, identifies treatment objectives, and designs an appropriate treatment pathway using technologies such as ozone, nanofiltration, reverse osmosis, ultraviolet disinfection,n and advanced filtration systems.

Ozone remains an important component of many treatment systems because it provides powerful oxidation and disinfection capabilities without introducing additional chemical residues into the water.

Beyond Drinking Water: Agricultural Applications

Biozone continues to explore advanced treatment technologies for agricultural applications where water quality, crop health, and sustainability are important considerations.

Technologies such as ultra-fine bubble systems, oxygen enrichment, and advanced water conditioning can help farmers improve water quality and support more efficient agricultural operations.

As pressure increases on global water resources, the ability to optimise water quality for both drinking water and agricultural use will continue to play an important role in sustainable resource management.
