For more than two decades, Biozone Manufacturing has partnered with Freshmark, the fresh produce procurement and distribution division of the Shoprite Group, to enhance the quality and longevity of fresh fruit and vegetables throughout its national cold chain network.

Operating across multiple distribution centres in South Africa, Freshmark plays a critical role in receiving, storing and distributing thousands of tonnes of fresh produce to Shoprite, Checkers and other Group retailers every day. Maintaining optimal storage conditions is essential to preserving freshness, reducing spoilage and ensuring consumers receive high-quality produce.

To support these objectives, Biozone has supplied and commissioned ozone generation systems within Freshmark’s cold storage facilities nationwide. These systems continuously treat the air within the cold rooms, reducing airborne bacteria, mould and fungal spores while oxidising ethylene gas, the naturally occurring plant hormone responsible for accelerating the ripening process.

By creating a cleaner storage environment and slowing premature ripening, Biozone’s ozone technology helps Freshmark extend the storage life of fresh produce, minimise post-harvest losses and improve overall product quality throughout the distribution process.
