THE USE OF OZONE FOR ELIMINATING ODOURS IN THE HOSPITALITY INDUSTRY

The hospitality industry includes hotels, restaurants, bars and coffee shops.  The following areas are where ozone can be used in each relevant aspect of the hospitality industry.

Ozone generators are only used by hotels and restaurants, which have very high standards of hygiene and health. However, every hotel or bed and breakfast should have a portable ozone generator for use in situations where nothing else would work, for deodorising functions.

They can be easy-to-use portable units or wall-mounted, with many different uses in the hospitality industry.

They generate ozone gas from normal air, thereby increasing and improving oxygen levels.  Ozone is the most effective method of sanitising and deodorising any area.   Not only that, but ozone is a natural gas, which means that by sanitising and deodorising with ozone, no dangerous chemical residues are left behind.

IN THE KITCHEN

Because ozone oxidises bacteria, viruses, fungi, moulds, and pollen, using it in the kitchen creates a sanitary environment in which to prepare food, free from germs and disease.  It is far more effective than conventional cleaning methods because, as a gas, it reaches all surfaces, including behind cupboards, under units, and on the walls and ceiling.

By neutralising bacteria, ozone also eliminates all odours, making the kitchen completely free of unpleasant smells from cooking, dustbins, drains, and even chemical pollutants like glue or paint.

Often, the insides of a fridge or freezer absorb unpleasant smells of fish or garlic, which cannot be cleaned away with detergents.  Ozone permeates all surfaces inside the treated area, eliminating odours from the fridge or freezer, as well as from cracks and corners that are inaccessible to conventional cleaning methods.

Ozone will make your perishables last longer.  In a pantry or refrigerator, ozone keeps the air free from bacteria, slowing down the ripening of fruits and vegetables and extending the life of meat and eggs substantially.

By making your kitchen cleaner and free from bacteria, ozone eliminates the bacteria that insects like cockroaches and flies rely on to survive.

In staff washrooms and changing rooms, disinfect clothing and shoes to prevent the spread of bacteria into the kitchen from contaminated clothing.

Ozone can be used successfully in high humidity areas to kill mould or mildew on ceilings, walls, linen, clothing, shoes, etc., which can then be scraped off easily.

IN THE LOUNGE AND BAR AREAS

Ozone will neutralise any odours, and is especially effective for getting rid of the smell of cigarette smoke, even if it has permeated the furniture and curtains.

Odours that ozone will completely eradicate:

  • Paint smells
  • Glue fumes
  • Spilt alcohol
  • Pet urine
  • Mildew
  • Dampo
  • Body odours
  • Fire damage (strong smoky smell).

Ozone creates a hygienic environment free from bacteria and viruses. By flooding the treated area at night, when pests are most active, it helps eliminate mites, fleas, cockroaches, flies, and other insects by creating an environment unfavourable for their survival.

Ozone is beneficial for the day after a party when a room still smells like cigarettes, alcohol or food, even after the guests have gone and the room has been cleaned.  The ozone generator left on in the closed room overnight will deodorise the room, carpets, furniture and curtains.

Ozone generators can also be permanently installed in areas such as smoking rooms or bars, which are frequently used and have a strong odour of smoke, necessitating constant deodorisation and neutralisation.  This will not only eliminate a long-standing issue but also foster a healthier environment for both guests and staff, regardless of their smoking habits.

IN BATHROOMS AND PUBLIC RESTROOMS

The growth of mildew, bacteria, and mould can be prevented with ozone equipment, and unpleasant bathroom odours can be eliminated.

Public Bathrooms

Ozone generators can be fitted into public restrooms to maintain a low level of bacteria and deodorise the area, creating the most sanitary conditions possible for clients and guests.

Airborne chemicals and surface bacteria can cause unpleasant and harmful odours.

Ozone not only deodorises washrooms effectively, but it also kills the germs that can lurk on surfaces such as taps and toilets.

Bacteria counts can be reduced dramatically through the use of ozone, particularly on the toilet seat, proving that ozone has sanitising properties.

Ozone should be used in conjunction with standard cleaning procedures to enhance the disinfecting process.

The gas can reach inaccessible areas frequently missed by other cleaning techniques. The generator is economical to run, requires no chemical consumables, and maintenance is minimal.

Application Example

A leading cross-channel ferry company has recently installed a 100-mg/hr ozoniser in their toilets to improve odour control.  Sickness in a ferry cabin results in that cabin not being utilised for several days.  By subjecting the cabin to ozone at a rate of 1000 mg/hr, the smells were eradicated within a couple of hours, and the cabin was back in service in time for the next crossing.

IN THE OFFICES

To prevent smoking employees from annoying non-smokers, the generator can be used in an office area to deodorise and neutralise the smell of smoke.

Ozone use in an office setting can reduce pollen in the air, thereby preventing hay fever, and also disinfect the air, preventing the spread of flu and airborne viruses.

IN THE BEDROOMS

If the ozone generator is left to run in an empty room, the ozone gas will sanitise and deodorise and also eliminate musty, stale bedroom smells permeating linen and curtains. It also kills bacteria and mildew, making a smoking room or area smell like a non-smoking room.

The generator can be closed inside a cupboard to deodorise linen, clothing, shoes and jackets, including leather.  This means all fungi and mildew will be killed, and any insects like moths and mites will be driven away or killed.

Because ozone kills bacteria and pollen, it will reduce hay fever symptoms and help to prevent the spread of viruses like influenza and other airborne diseases.

Ozone will prevent the growth of mould, mildew, and fungus in cupboards, carpets, and walls, thereby eliminating the stale and musty odour associated with such problems.

GARBAGE ROOM

Commonly, garbage rooms present a problem in hotels and restaurants as they are typically situated close to the receiving areas and apart from the offensive odours, they can present a health risk. Ozone can be piped into the containers to neutralise the odours, or the garbage room can be continuously treated.

Ozone generators are a standard fixture in hotels throughout the world. The most common unit used is a portable machine that deodorises hotel rooms in 20 minutes or less, as well as any areas where odours are a problem, such as after a cocktail party, burnt smells from the kitchen, or after fresh paint, to enable immediate occupation.

There are several examples of their success in bars, restaurants and leading hotels in South Africa, even though the technology is so new to the country.  In addition, there are many examples of homemakers who are successfully using ozone generators to prevent hay fever and flu, and deodorise and sanitise their homes.
