Technology

 

Industrially, ozone is produced when a dry oxygen or air stream is subjected to a high voltage, high-density electrical current to obtain a homogeneous discharge.

 

Biozone’s ozone generators, which are powered by specialised dielectrics and sophisticated power electronics, are not only energy-efficient but also reliable and resilient. Drinking water

 

Drinking water is disinfected when a residual of 0.4 mg/l of ozone has been maintained for 4 minutes or using CT Factors 0.8 mg/l

 

Ozone has numerous additional benefits beyond disinfection in the drinking water process, depending on its application.

 

  • In preozonation, ozone enhances clarification and prevents the transformation of organic material into halogenated compounds, also known as haloforms. It also promotes the destruction of numerous microorganisms, such as algae.
  • Primary ozonation treatment specifically breaks down trace contaminants, such as detergents and pesticides. It enhances the biodegradability of various organic substances, which are then removed through a biological treatment step.
  •  Combined treatments involving ozone and activated carbon, or ozone and peroxide, are currently the most effective means available to water engineers for removing specific contaminants and constitute a vital safeguard against accidental contamination.

 

Waste water reuse and recycling

 

Application of ozone in wastewater treatment is an expanding market and already includes the destruction or removal of: 

 

– Complex organic molecules to improve biodegradability 

– Cyanides and phenols from chemical waste 

– Odours from condensates of evaporated wool washwaters, which can then be recycled 

– Colour from dye works’ effluents, paper mills, etc. 

– Surfactants, detergents from washing centres 

– Odour elimination from urban wastewater plants or industrial flue gas. 

 

In addition, subjecting municipal waste waters, combined municipal waste waters, or combined municipal industrial waste waters to a final ozone process enables reuse for applications such as washwater, irrigation, or firefighting systems. 

 

Pulp and paper industries

 

Ozone is the most economical chemical for pulp bleaching processes, avoiding the production of chlorinated compounds (AOX). 

 

Several pulp mills in Southern Africa are already producing ozone-bleached pulp.

 

Environment protection

Like the pulp and paper industry, the chemical industry has sought new ways to improve productivity while using environmentally sound processes.
