The challenge

Helen Joseph Hospital uses borehole water, and has a boiler room that needs treated water. The earlier treatment plant had deteriorated through inadequate maintenance, and the boiler water treatment was no longer functional. The hospital needed a replacement treatment skid and boiler treatment.

The solution

Biozone recommended replacing the treatment skid and the non-functional boiler treatment, and in July 2025 proposed an engineered replacement covering both:

  • Hospital water: a borehole-water treatment plant designed for 10,000 L/h, combining AFM filtration, activated carbon and Katalox media with UV disinfection and a sodium-hypochlorite residual.
  • Boiler water: a separate ion-exchange softening system for the boiler room.
  • Operation and support: automatic backwash equipment, with maintenance and chemical supply under the service agreement.

The results

  • Both new systems were in production by late July 2025.
  • A five-month service and chemical-supply agreement was approved following commissioning, and service visits and chemical supply continued into January 2026.
  • Biozone’s original plant, dating from about 2021, had treated more than 600 million litres before its replacement.

Design intent

The replacement systems are designed to support hospital water availability, improve borehole-water quality and reduce boiler scale. Using borehole water can reduce the hospital’s demand on the municipal supply, and softening can help preserve boiler heat-transfer efficiency.
